The year is almost at an end, and you are running around trying to complete everything before Christmas. But soon it will be time to spend time with friends and whanau, relax and take a well deserved break.
When you are relaxing on the beach, or between bites on that fishing trip, take five minutes to reflect on the last year and ask yourself just two simple questions;
Ensure you have pen and paper and write down the answers to these questions, file them safely away in an envelope. Or you might just record your answers on a smart phone or iPad. Once you have captured your answers, return to the important bits such as catching that big snapper or playing on the beach with the whanau.
In the New Year, before you get back into the daily routine, open that envelope, iPad or phone, review your answers and plan how you are are going to achieve your goals.
The plan needs to be able to address the goals you set yourself when you were dreaming on the beach or the boat. It needs to be specific - you need to be able to measure how you achieve each goal and you need a deadline. I am sure we all have 101 chores to do around the house, it is only when there is a deadline (such as family coming up for Christmas) that we finally get those chores done.
You have done all the right things to set yourself up for 2019. But all of your hard work will be wasted if you do not monitor your progress. It is far too easy to get stuck in the day-to-day running of the business and not make those goals and action plans happen. Before you know it, you are getting ready for Christmas 2019.
Make an appointment in your diary every month – it only needs to be for 10 minutes. Give yourself time to reflect on how you are actioning your plan, what is working. Or, more importantly, what isn’t working and therefore needs adapting.
If you are organised and self disciplined this may be easy. If you are somone who can be easily be distracted it can be more of a challenge. You may need someone to hold you to account and make sure you do the things you committed to. This could be a business partner, spouse or someone independent. The important thing is that you respect them, you will feel guilty if you don’t achieve the agreed action plan and they will not let you off the hook too easily. They don’t have to be too mean, but they can’t be a pushover either.
If you follow these steps I am sure you will achieve a lot in 2019.
We do this in our own business. We set both annual and 90 day goals and have an action plan to achieve these. We have a breakfast meeting diarised every month, where we review our goals, check on progress, sometimes adapt or amend the action plan. We rarely, if ever, achieve all the goals we set. However, we always achieve something and are aware which goals we haven’t yet achieved and more importantly why.
