Haere Ra 2020..., by Ayla Pene
We have almost come to the end of what has been a strange and stressful year and most of us are now making the last-minute scramble to complete everything before Christmas.
Take a moment to reflect on the past year and be proud of the way you have adapted – working, parenting and schooling from home, learning how to use Zoom and using video calling more than ever to keep in touch with family and friends.
Make sure you take some time out to rest, recharge and spend time with loved ones. When you have a spare moment to reflect on your business (or any area of your life), ask yourself these simple questions:
- how do you define success?
- what is stopping you?
- how will you know when you get there?
Write down your answers and put them away for safe keeping. Now get back to the more important bits whether it be catching that big snapper, a beach day out with whānau or watching the sunset. Laughter is an instant holiday and a great stress buster so enjoy yourself and have some fun.
In the New Year, before you get back into the daily routine, take out your notes. Review your answers and make a plan for success.
Let’s smash some goals!
Whatever success looks like to you - increased profitablility, less time spent running the business, expansion - you need a plan to make this happen. Break goals down into smaller, more achievable tasks. This will give you the satisfaction of being able to “tick” things off and you will be more likely to continue with your plan and achieve your goals.
Call in reinforcements
If you are organised and self disciplined putting your plan together may be easy for you. If you are someone who can be easily distracted or gets too busy with the day to day tasks it can be more of a challenge. You may need someone to bounce ideas off, hold you to account and make sure you do the things you promised. This could be a business partner, spouse or someone independent. The important thing is that you respect them, you will feel guilty if you don’t stick to the plan and they will not let you off the hook too easily. Choose someone who will celebrate your achievements with you and encourage you to keep pushing forward.
Review and adapt
Monitor your progress regularly, depending on what your goal is you may need do this quarterly, monthly or even weekly. As we have been reminded this year, things don’t always go to plan so make sure to identify roadblocks and make adjustments to your plan as needed. Celebrate wins however small they may be and whatever comes your way remember you can adapt, just look at how well you adapted in 2020.
Decisions x Actions x Accountability = RESULTS
